Worth It Wednesdays

As January ends and we prepare for a new month of advocating for job justice for NJEA members, it’s important for us to reflect on the actions that have led us this far.

Sen. Joe Cryan (D-20), a primary sponsor of our Chapter 78 relief bill, S-2606, said it best when he visited with members at NJEA headquarters on Jan. 17: “When you do what you’re doing, you are making a difference. We are not at the finish line yet, but the work you are doing is moving us down the field. It’s important you keep it up.”

Members are leading this campaign, and we are moving these bills.

NJEA members are sending text messages, making phone calls, meeting with legislators, wearing #RedForEd on Wednesdays and posting their #FixTheUnfairness photos on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

It’s working.

We are making a difference.

To date, each of the bills have more sponsors and co-sponsors than many ever thought possible.

  • The Chapter 78 relief bill, S-2606/A-4352: five sponsors in the Senate, 27 sponsors in the Assembly
  • The Anti-Privatization bill, S-296/A-3185/A-3395: eight sponsors in the Senate, 34 sponsors in the Assembly
  • The ESP Due Process bill, S-3089/A-3664: six sponsors in the Senate, 27 sponsors in the Assembly

As we continue to build momentum on our campaign, we will continue the Worth-It Wednesdays until these bills have been signed into law. On Feb. 6, Feb. 13, Feb. 20, and Feb. 27 plan to wear Red for Ed and post photos of your members at school tagging your elected officials and using #FixTheUnfairness.

We will send out information and resources for collective action as our campaign continues to build member-driven momentum.

Thank you,

Membership Alert – Be Informed

Dear Local Presidents,

We have been informed that there has been a noticeable increase in financial providers attempting to schedule appointments with members by pretending to have a relationship with specific districts.  Members are getting emails with official-looking designs and websites that are fooling them into thinking that these providers are connected to the state pension system, school district, or association.

Please alert all members of the following:

There is only ONE NEA-approved source for supplementing retirement.  It is the NEA Retirement Program, provided through Security Benefit.

There is only ONE NJEA-approved source for income protection/disability insurance.  It is provided by Prudential and represented by Educators Insurance Services.

There is only ONE NEA and NJEA approved source for auto and home insurance.  It is California Casualty.

Please help us avoid those who purposely mislead our members.
