Update about Coronavirus

Hello everyone,

Representatives from the NHVEA executive committee were invited by Mr. Bender to a meeting today regarding the possibility of “virtual school” if the district needs to be closed because of the Coronavirus. Per new guidance received by the NJ Department of Education late yesterday (see link below), the DOE is allowing online instruction to be counted in the 180 day requirement if the Department of Health gives a written directive for a school to close because of the coronavirus.  As you know, some PA and NJ schools have closed recently.  Going forward, if the schools are actually closed, the decision will be made by the Department of Health.  For context, they said that a school would not close because of a case of the common flu, and this new virus at this point is no more dangerous than the common flu.  As such, it is unlikely that schools would actually close.  However, things can change quickly, so we will inform you as soon as we have new information.

In an abundance of caution, representatives from the Hunterdon County Department of Health and Department of Education will meet with representatives from the schools this coming Wednesday in order to develop a county-level plan for what virtual school would look like, if circumstances change.  We stressed that if virtual school becomes necessary, that there must be flexibility for staff regarding their responsibilities.  It likely would involve posting assignments for the students and being available to answer questions, perhaps through Google Classroom, Google Hangouts, etc.

Attached are the most current guidelines provided by the NJ Department of Health and NJ Department of Education.  If you have any questions, you can call the health department hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

Thanks,
Steve
